Charlie Hustle and Big Mac - Jan 27
Happy New Year to you all. It has been awhile since my last blog. I have been spending a lot of time with my family and with an almost two year old walking around during the day, and doing homework and throwing the ball around with the 6 and 8 year old, I haven’t found much time to blog. The collapse of the Florida Winter League, although painful, has been a blessing for my family and I. I have been able to spend a bunch time with them. Spring training is right around the corner, hard to believe we will be back in the saddle very soon. Baseball Pros is continuing to grow. 2009 was another successful year of camps and combines. It is wonderful to know that we are helping make a difference in young men’s lives. I am looking forward to continuing this effort in 2010! Steroids are in the news again as we get ready for Spring Training. I was asked the question the other day about Pete Rose vs. Mark McGwire in getting into the Hall of Fame. About that time, this article came out on Espn’s website. It is very thought provoking. Pete Rose, the all time hit King isn’t allowed anywhere near a Spring Training complex but Mark McGwire, an admitted steroid user, will be a major league hitting coach this season. Doesn’t really sound fair to me. Both cheated the game and both admitted their mistakes. Yet we forgive one but not the other. We allow one in our game and the other out. Why is that? I am not sure what the answer is. I could speculate but don’t want to ruffle too many feathers. I would love to hear Pete Rose talk hitting, talk base running, listen to him instruct young players. I think he belongs in our game. Especially if we are going to allow people in that, “Take illegal steroids and performance enhancers, deceive baseball fans, make millions of tainted dollars, cheat the record book and the Roger Maris family, press the truth mute button, go into hiding and then reappear five years later with tears in his eyes and a confession with more holes than a catcher’s mask. (PEDs didn’t you help you hit home runs, Mark? Really?)” Would like to know your thoughts.
